NHL Observations: Volume three

So in what seems to be an awfully quick consummation to where we are now in this shortened 2013 NHL season, we have reached the final quarter and it’s time to dissect what I have seen thusfar.

Feeling the Blues?

In an earlier entry, I opinionated that the St.Louis Blues were on a steady incline, instantly becoming serious Western Conference contenders. The young nucleus that the Blues possess with the likes of Alex Pietrangelo, who in my estimation in the early going was a Norris candidate, Jaden Schwartz and the reincarnation of Alex Mogilny , that being Vladimir Tarasensko, have teetered off to a point that it has forced general manager Doug Armstrong to acquire veterans like Jordin Leopold to handle the load that the young kids have dropped in the past month. From cup threats to perhaps being on the outside looking in come early May, what can be done to save this sinking ship? On a completely personal note, because I’m a huge Oilers fan and am hoping that they surpass St.Louis, I hope they don’t. However, the impartial blogger in me says the way to save St.Louis is oddly enough to give MORE of the reigns to the youngens. Kevin Shattenkirk, who was one of the key cogs in the trade that sent away the former first overall pick Erik Johnson to St.Louis, prior to the game on the 28th of March, went eight games without a point. Aside from the aforementioned Pietrangelo, the backend lacks serious punch. That’s why Shattenkirk’s lack of offence is becoming increasingly paramount because the Blues need goals, that is the ONLY way the Blues will slide their way out of this funk and stay in the playoff race. There’s all of this unprofounded talk that the Blues need more defense, and I suppose the acquisition of Leopold proved the pundants right, but the Blues true weakness is a lack of scoring depth. It’s either trade for a Derek Roy/Ryan Clowe or pray to the gods that the likes of David Perron and Jaden Schwartz start to step up and become contributing factors. 2.79 goals per game just isn’t going to cut it.

Detroit’s defense needs an instant “Bouw-flex”

The Calgary Flames have obviously started what could be deemed as a fire-sale. Earlier in the week, the Calgary Flames dealt one of the greatest players of their organization`s history in Jarome Iginla, paving the way for other Flames with some true asset potential to find their way on the trade block. The name I wanted to focus on is that of Jay Bouwmeester. Detroit has been a mess defensively the entire shortened season, and have been getting sub par performances from Ian White and Jakub Kindl. Everyone kind of knew that the loss of Niklas Lidstrom  would be difficult to deal with but no one could`ve possibly envisioned the impact it has had. General Manager Ken Holland is not one to give up on a season and expect him to be a player on Wednesday`s trade deadline. The player that would be available at the right price would be the former Medicine Hat Tiger Bouwmeester. Without knowing what is going through the mind of Jay Feaster, and based on the recent value that he was able to cash in on with the Iginla trade, expect  a fifth rounder back(just jokes), I`d have to venture to say that fair value in return for Jay would be a prospect like Thomas Tatar and a first round pick. Lost in the fact that Bouwmeester is an unproven playoff performer is the fact that he a former 2006 Olympian and still has good years ahead of him. He`s not going to mistake himself with a top two defenceman anymore but he`s an excellent skater and is potent offensively. For a team like Detroit who needs a calm puck mover on the back end, he may be the quintessential piece needed to turn around the Wings season.

Vancouver/Buffalo trade re-examined

At the 2011-2012 trade deadline, much was criticized when it came to the trade involving the Vancouver Canucks and Buffalo Sabres. Heralded junior star Cody Hodgson had reportedly requested a trade and Mike Gillis ended up flipping him to Buffalo in exchange for Zack Kassian. Anyone that knows anything about Hodgson and Kassian know that the two are completely different players. Hodgson is the definition of skill while in comparison Kassian is a hard nosed role player who isn’t afraid to get his nose dirty. The trade was criticized at the time because Canuck penchants felt that the biggest block that was in the way of championship success was a lack of goal scoring behind the Sedin twins, which ended up being proof in the pudding due to the fact that they went ice cold in their first round series with the eventual Stanley Cup Champions Los Angeles Kings. Fast forward to the 2013 and Hodgson is on pace for a pro rated thirty goal year and Zack Kassian has been demoted to the America Hockey League. Where I sit, the Canucks were in a no-win position. You had an unhappy player in the lineup who wanted greater opportunity elsewhere so what were you supposed to do? Some would argue acquire multiple high round picks but that would’ve been contradictory to what the Canucks ultimate objective was. They were and they are in a win now mentality, so anything less would have been cheating the fans of the lower mainland who just the year before experienced a trip to a Stanley Cup final. Surely fans in British Columbia haven’t yet forgotten the infamous post game seven riot.  Zack Kassian is a 22 year old kid, so it’s time for fans of the Canuck to take a step back and smell the roses and realize the best of this former Canadian World Junior representative are yet to come.

2013 Major League Baseball Prognostications

2013 Major League Baseball prognostications:

In this entry, I will comprehensively (as best as I can) predict how I see the 2013 Major League Baseball campaign playing out. Expectations are sky high for the boys from T.O but this blogger isn’t completely convinced after a winter of examining in greater depth the moves that general manager Alex Anthopoulos was able to accomplish. Are they a greater team then the team that was fielded in the 2012 ball season? No question, but some would argue, including myself that the same holes that plagued Toronto last year still exist.  Sergio Santos as a bonafide closer for a contending club? He’s no Billy Koch to put it mildly.

I will predict the division by division standings while at the same time mapping out how I see the post-season materializing in what I expect will be an unpredictable, exciting summer. I will also hand out some award winner prognostications along with some miscellaneous thoughts along the way.

So, it appears I finally have time to provide an updated count on progress in this crapshoot people call "predictions". It was an unbelievable Saturday although I incorrectly stated I went 10-2 when in reality I hacked my way to a 9-3 mark but followed up Saturday with a Super Sunday going 7-1. Unforunately I wasn't able to capitalize on my momentum headng into the week, only amounting to a 2-3 mark yesterday. Today was a devastatingly bad outcome as I was only able to muster up three wins. Overall record is now at.......161-121

It was indeed Homanly possible

So on this Sunday evening, the 2013 Scotties Tournament of Hearts has wrapped up with the young , fearless Team Ontario skipped by Rachel Homan upending the veteran laden Jennifer Jones Manitobian squad. I have no doubt in my mind that Homan and company will be great representatives as Team Canada at the upcoming World Championships in Riga, Latvia. It was an interesting week in the sense that we saw four teams clearly separate themselves from the pack and a question that we must ask is, very reminiscent to men’s curling are we seeing a core  group of teams stand out from the rest and become a consistent group that will be routinely advance out of their province?  The group I am referring to consists of the now former Team Canada rink Heather Nedohin, our  ’13 champ Homan, the aforementioned Jennifer Jones and the perceivably  nicer then nice Kelly Scott.  Will we be witness to a similar trait that has completely taken over men’s curling in which if your last name isn’t one of Koe,Martin, Howard or Stoughton you might as well park your chances of winning a National Championship at arrival? I think we’re on the verge of this and there are a few issues why this could be.

First and foremost, the dedication it takes to reach elite level status in the game of curling takes  a tremendous amount of practice and commitment to the sport. Only a very select group of teams, a few of which I described in the opening paragraph are touring on the world curling tour. There is a colossal difference when weekend after weekend playing the top teams in the world as opposed to the majority of provincial champions who spend their winters participating in their regional tours which obviously won’t provide the same level of competition that the world stage will provide.  Touring is key, but perhaps the most important attribute of having the ability to reach a Rachel Homan type of level is securing the proper funding that allows these teams to set aside the time to practice travel without having to worry about something that most people fret, (well at least I do) which is work. Society has to work for a living to pay the bills but when corporate sponsors step up and cover event and travel expenses, it eases and aids these teams to find the time to practice throughout the day. Like the old adage dictates, practice makes perfect!

So a few thoughts on tonight’s final…. Wow was the Homan team on their A game. Both on and off the ice if you catch my drift.  The Jennifer Jones rink has a penchant of stepping up when the games matter most, but this week it appears Rachel stole that moniker and ran with it. The strategical concept that I’m most impressed about, and I know this is something that Vic Rauter and the TSN gang harped on a few times is the way they use the ticks and aren’t afraid to throw the upweight. In the men’s game, this type of play is mandatory to succeed, but these young ladies are one of, if not the only women’s team to use such a ploy which may change the way the women’s game is played.  Rival teams such as Jones will have to pick up on this innovativeness to match wits with Homan because there is no question in my mind that a dynasty may have started. Watching the National junior finals the last few years, at least in Canada there are no other young lady teams who come remotely close to Ontario’s level which is precisely why I believe Homan has the opportunity to win multiple Scotties titles over the next ten to fifteen years.  Another thought I have on the final, and it’s not necessarily related to the game is the lineup formation of the Jennifer Jones foursome. At one point late in today’s final,  third Kaitlyn Lawes was shooting a elementary 95%! The body language is what I picked up on though as it appeared that she was becoming increasingly frustrated with her skip’s strategical decisions and the overall play of the other three members. I think being how she is a two time Canadian champ herself, she rightfully craves more input and quite possibly craves throwing last bricks on a team that had moderate success in the fall/early winter when Jennifer was away dealing with her pregnancy. She’s obviously a motivated individual which  tells me she’s motivated to make a legitimate run at the 2014 Olympic trials but if that fails look for the young curler, who may just make( see below) my 2013 Scotties “All Looker”team to form her own squad in time for the 2014-2015 season.  But back to the game now, and I’ll just say that aside from the fourth and fifth ends in which Ontario looked a little off their game, this game was never in question and Manitoba was constantly chasing late in ends. Lisa Weagles ability to pull of the Steve Gould-esque ticks, which I briefly touched on earlier was crucial and what doesn’t get the credit it of the game that she knows exactly the right point to bail out of ends and capitalize on the big weight presence. She has a poise about her that rivals veteran skips who have been the rodeo several more times then her.

Now to touch on the lighter side of this event for  a second, I will introduce what I hope will be a yearly entry(please support and bring more exposure to this blog people), that is the 2013 Scotties All Looker Team.  There were plenty of worthy candidates to choose from, but I’ve weeded it down to my top four. Like any other all –star selection,  I have selected one member from each position. Curious if you agree or not…..comments appreciated ya’ll know.

NHL Picks for February 21 and 22,2013

I'll take some pride, even on this light scheduled wednesday that I correctly predicted the upset that saw the Semyon Varlamov led Colorado Avalanche dispose of the "We just want a damn goal" St.Louis Blues. 2-1 puts me at 134-102 for the year. I don't know why, and just watch me go 0-10 tomorrow but something tells me that I'm going to run the table on thursday. Is it over confidence? NHL Observations Volume Two

The 2013 NHL campaign is a little more than a quarter through, and I`ve seen more than enough to entail a few observations pertaining to the first month of the season.

Blue Bliss

If I were to build a NHL franchise, I would certainly try to model it after the St.Louis Blues. General Manager Doug Armstrong and Head Coach, former Kamloops Blazer bench boss Ken Hitchcock have put together a nucleus that is the right mix between youthful exuberance and enough size that provides a headache to opposing organizations. What I love about the way Hitch has handled this Missouri juggernaut is that he`s not afraid to give big minutes to his unproven but maybe slightly more effective players such as Vladimir Tarasenko and Jaden Schwartz. In Tarasenko`s case, his play has catapulted him into top six minutes, and with Schwartz, even though the production has been sub par, he`s providing a element of electricity on the fourth line which is a dynamic a plug like Cam Jannsen just can`t bring. Hitchcock`s confidence in the youngsters is against every principle he`s had in previous tenures, which is probably why other than an aberration of the 1999-2000 season in Dallas, he`s had limited success. Scouring message boards over the years, I can say with complete certainty that fans in Columbus pleaded with management to give more opportunity to the younger players who needed development in which Hitchcock never seemed willing to return the favor. Is it possible that through all of these failed stops, hes finally learned his lesson and realized this is a young mans league and the NHL is played differently then it was in the mid-nineties?  Blues fans obviously feel he has.

Calgary Flaming out

For years (certainly for the last three or four years) I’ve had the opinion that it was time for the Flames to drop the veteran mantle and divulge in full on rebuild mode. Well, Darryl Sutter didn’t cooperate with that philosophy and as karma would have it got kicked out of an unwinnable situation in cow town. and landed in Stanley Cup Championship land. After one Sutter was punted, and inevitably the second Sutter was kicked to the curb not long later Jay Feaster was given the reigns for which he has stuck to the same principles that Darryl had. The Flames are not a playoff team. How many year does Feaster have to analyze this team to know that the likes of Mike Cammalleri and Jarome Iginla CANNOT lead this team to any kind of playoff success. Feaster is an educated man and did wonders with Tampa Bay when he was employed as the General Manager there, so he didn’t fall from the tree which has me wondering if pressures from team president Ken King is disabling him from making such important organizational moves, such as parting with the aging fan favourite Iginla.  Credit Jay for being innovative this summer with a signing such as Czech Republican Jiri Hudler, but so far the sixteen million dollar deal over the course of four years has seen the Flames not get a positive return on the investment thusfar. I realize Hudler has suffered through some minor ailments but there’s no excuse for one of your higher paid players only tallying ten points.  The bottom line is, players like Sven Baertschl and goaltender Leland Irving are the future of the team, so it’s about time the brass sees if they can individually step up and take control of the inconsistencies that has plagued this team for quite some time. Further to that point, it is extremely puzzling as to why the Flames re-assigned Irving back to Abbotsford of the American Hockey League.  I apologize, I forgot that Joey McDonald is the next Mikka Kiprusoff(tongue in cheek)

A trade to remember

Huge deal for the Habs.  A goaltender swap that exchanged Cedrick Desjardins for Dustin Tokarski. Now, the average fan is probably wondering how a trade involving two goaltenders that have almost virtually no National Hockey League experience could be classified as a huge trade? Well, there are a multitude of reasons. First and foremost, behind Carey Price the Canadians don’t, or didn’t have any feasible backup options. If you really believed Peter Budaj was a feasible option than you never saw the Colorado Avalanche in action a few years ago. Secondly, and in my eyes most importantly, Dustin Tokarski is a winner through and through. Everywere he has went, he’s won. From Midget AAA in Saskatchewan by winning a national title with the Prince Albert Mintos, in which he defeated fellow World Junior legend and Regina product Jordan Eberle in the final. Then he went on to the WHL, after being cut by both the Swift Current Broncos and Calgary Hitmen, he walked on with the Spokane Chiefs and then became an eighteen year old starter and led the youthful Chiefs to a Memorial Cup title, which was marred(or was made memorable, whichever way you want to slice it) by the infamous cup dropping incident. After his memorial cup triumph, he represented Team Canada at the World Junior Hockey Championship, and surprise,surprise…..a Gold medal was had. And, if you needed any more evidence that all, what fellow players refer to as “Tik” does is win, look no further than the 2011-2012 AHL Calder Cup. With Tampa Bay’s farm team at the Norfolk, he and fellow Chief alumni Tyler Johnson were instrumental in leading the Admirals to glory. He doesn’t lose, he’s calm in pressure situations. His calmness in big games will serve him well in the hockey mecca that is Montreal. In the Western Hockey League, the Tri-City Americans and Spokane Chiefs are bitter rivals and in a twist of fate the Habs will now or in the future employ an American and Chief as friendly compatriots. Remember this trade, because in any playoff scenarios that the Habs find themselves in, they now have somebody that can admirably fill in if Price gets injured or struggles.

Bargnani v Boozer

ESPN reports today that the Toronto Raptors and Chicago Bulls of the NBA have embarked on, what they have described as “exploratory” discussions on a trade that would send Chicago’s Carlos Boozer to T.O in exchange for Andrea Bargnani. If I’m Mr.Colangelo, where do I sign up?

I look at this possible deal on behalf of the Raptors, and there are a few things here that would make this a match made in heaven. For starters, in my eyes Bryan Colangelo has over the years addressed the team’s finesse while blatantly ignoring the toughness issue that has plagued the Raps over the years, allowing opposition to walk right over the at times lifeless Raps. At the time of Sam Mitchell’s firing, Colangelo made it prudently clear that the team’s defensive structure would have to be strongly examined when it came to hiring the heir apparent. That philosophy was followed through when it came to this as they brought over Dwayne Casey from Dallas who at the time had just laid claim to the 2011 National Basketball Association championship. However, as I stated in a previous blog post, hiring a defensive expert is one thing, but if you don’t acquire the right pieces you might as well bring in your local high school club coach, in other words, it just won’t work.

Demar Derozan, a decent three who has shown significant improvement to a point that I believe he is a top 10 three guard in the league. Terrance Ross, although not to be mistaken as a defensive specialist has the penchant to knock down the three ball and deliver Vince Carter-esque dunks. Jonas”how do I spell your last name” Valanciunas was supposed to be the steal of the 2011 draft has been anything but. As a European coming over to North America, anyone who didn’t expect obvious growing pains would’ve of been classified as delusional but not even the most researched expert could’ve expected the kind of production Jonas(not even going to try the last name again) has delivered. The 7.1 point per game average although not great is not my most concering statistic. A man of his stature should be clawing more then 4.9 rebounds per game. A lack of physical aggression has been the typecast for most Euros coming over the Association but there also haven’t been many players with pedigree going into this season.  Valanciunas(OK, I did it) would be graded as a disappointment. Kyle Lowry, aka Mighty Mouse Jr, has been alright at times when he has managed to stay healthy.  The pressure has mounted on him even further now due to last week’s trade of Jose Calderon off to Detroit that brought in Connecticut grad Rudy Gay. Speaking of the aforementioned trade of Gay, once again they acquired a sure fire scorer who ISN’T known for his D. All of this offensive firepower is all fine and dandy but if you can’t limit the opposition to under one hundred points which they’ve been guilty of quite a lot this campaign, the offence will not lead to advancing the win column. This all leads to my opening paragraph as to why the acquisition of Carlos Boozer makes oodles of sense, something the Raptors brass has lacked since it’s 1995 inception.

Carlos Boozer is a mean son of a gun who can add to the identity that coach Casey is trying to establish. If you google”Dwayne Casey’s type of player”, Carlos Boozer would be the first name to appear on the search. Not known as a prolific player, Boozer is all meat and potatoes, very reminiscent to the National Hockey League’s Mike Richards, no talent and all smarts. When I look at a future potential starting five including Lowry, Gay, Derozan/Ross, Valanciunas and Boozer, for the first time in a long time I see a formidable lineup that could compete with the upper echelon. Comparatively speaking, as much as I would love to see Boozer in red, white and purple, I can’t stress enough that the greatest reasoning for being in favour of this trade is not so much Boozer, it’s ridding them of the softer then facial tissue Andrea Bargnani.  He can take his high-school level of defence and his love of pasta across the border and see if he can endear himself to the Chicago faithful. Highly unlikely however because the Bulls have a rich tradition of playing above quality defense with such guys as the tattoed filled Dennis Rodman and the all around Scottie Pippen and the surprisingly underrated defender, that being M.J himself. Reports are the players surrounding Bargnani in Toronto don’t care for his mellow competitive approach and during the time for which Andrea was sidelined better team cohesion was developed.

Simply put, when Colangelo first came to Toronto, his trademark was attempting the European experiement. Many have come and went, such as Jorge Garbajosa,Rasho Nesterovic and Hedo Turkoglu and it has become clear that the strategical vision that he had was flawed and would be wise to re-evaluate his team’s direction(although to be fair, he’s  realized some mistakes have been made and has slowly corrected some of those faux pas’). The last mistake that needs correction is unfortunately his biggest blunder, that being Bargnani. The quicker he does this the better as if he waits too long, it may be Bargnani who outlasts Colangelo with this organization.

A Predictably Unpredictable WHL Season thusfar,,,,

The Western Hockey League is ¾ of the way through their 2012/2013 regular season schedule. Throughout this particular campaign, the league has been mirrored in controversy (see the Portland Winterhawks recruiting violation post from about two months ago) ,poor attendance in markets like Regina and the ever prospering Prince George among others, but through thick and thin it has been another quality year in terms of the on ice product. Entailed in this post will be a few thoughts I have picked up throughout the season.

Ryan McGill, if not the favourite, has to be on a short list of about two to three for the WHL’s coach of the year. The head coach of the Kootenay Ice has done a remarkable job turning around this team from it’s dismal start to being on the cusp of a playoff position. At one point from late October to mid November,  the Ice found themselves clinging to a seven game skid. To make matters worse, shortly before Christmas, respected captain and Rockglen, Saskatchewan native Drew Czerwonka decided to leave the pastures of Cranbrook to explore educational opportunities. The post Czerwonka era has been one of puzzlement. Sam Reinhart has now started to show the ability that most scouts knew he had which has made him a top candidate for the first overall pick in the 2014 National Hockey League draft and has taken complete reigns of the hockey team and led them to circumstance where NO team will want to draw the Ice in the first round if they so happen to make the dance. The Ice play a stifling brand of defence led by overager Joey Leach and Mackenzie Skapski has finally debuted himself as a capable goalie In this league.

Will the real Kamloops Blazers please stand up? This team, solely based on performance can be labelled as team of multiple personalities. Which team from the Loops will we see next? The team that in September and October that literally every time they touched the puck it found the back of the net, or the team in November and December that appeared to be more along the lines of a middle of the pack Western conference contender?  There are some theories to why they have had such a rollercoaster year. At the time of their skid, they had just lost forward J.C Lipon to a World Junior Hockey Championship assignment and it’s possible that the chemistry that was formed between the aforementioned Lipon and Colorado Avalanche prospect Colin Smith was thrown out the window. When J.C came back, for whatever reason the swagger was gone and all of a sudden this team looked very ordinary which is surprising because they made a couple of nice pre deadline pickups. Those pickups were defenceman Joel Edmundson from the Moose Jaw Warriors and Kale Kessy from the Medicine Hat Tigers.  The pre-cursor to all of this is that the Blazers have recently started to “Blaze” the competition once again and ironically enough in the last two weeks or so Lipon and Smith have once again started to run haywire. The interesting thing to observe will be if Kamloops can truly compete with Western Conference powerhouses Kelowna and Portland.

So earlier this year there were some unprofounded rumours that if the Saskatoon Blades continued to play inconsistently that they would lose the rights as the host team in the upcoming Memorial cup. As evidenced by no future substantiating reports, all of this chatter was, as the great Sheldon Cooper would say were” largely hokum”. The Blades no doubt have some holes that will probably prevent them from being serious players when it comes time to battling in the Western playoffs, but by no means is it not possible from them  to get scorching hot in May and win the whole damn thing. The one perplexing thing about the Blades plan of attack at the trade deadline was their inability to land that marquee player that most host teams are able to secure. You look at the acquisitions that GM Lorne Molleken was able to lock-down and aside from maybe former Brandon Wheat King Michael Ferland, who I would label a ‘B’ prospect, they didn’t get anything that would blow your socks off. Evaluation of assets for the Blades has also been an issue as giving up first round picks for perennial third line players such as Collin Valcourt and Nathan Burns were questionable overpayments. In Valcourt’s personal instance, is someone who’s career high in goals is 16 first round pick worthy? Don’t completely rule out the Blades, but in all honesty I think the Houston Astros have a better chance winning the 2013 World Series than Toon Town does of winning the Western Hockey League.

The way the Portland Winterhawks have been rolling, specifically seventeen year old Nicholas Petan, he is most certainly in Most Valuable player discussion, looking to become the first seventeen to win the award since Joe Sakic was awarded co MVP in 1986-1987. To join Sakic in that class would be quite the achievement for the draft eligible Petan who going into this season wasn’t even Portland’s most talked about prospect…..who I am kidding, he still isn’t but he’s having a great year and has been Portland’s most effective sniper through and through. Though it would be a great story for the young Petan to be recognized for such a prestigious honour but he actually isn’t my prediction for the award. My pick belongs to Swift Current Bronco Adam Lowry. The son of former NHL’er and current Victoria Royal head coach Dave Lowry has been the heart and soul of Speedy Creek and for a team that I wasn’t sold on going into this campaign, he has worn the superman cape and carried this team on his back. It’ll be interesting to see what decision making process the voters take on this because by no means will Lowry end up with the most points but the award in it’s definition is given to the player that is most valuable to his team. Lowry doesn’t have the supporting cast of a Ty Rattie, Brendan Leipsic, Seth Jones and Tyler Wotherspoon like Petan does, and because of this he’s been solely instrumental in helping the Bronco’s become the feel good story of this season. In my pre-season projections, I had the Broncos anywhere from 9th-12th in the east, but now they are in position to take over top spot over the slumping Prince Albert Raiders in the eastern division. So just to confirm this for you readers, even though my praise for Petan was obvious in the opening of this paragraph, I’m speculating barring anything crazy that Petan will be named a finalist eventually bowing down to big #17 from SC.

First weekend observations....

So we are now through three days of the 2013 National Hockey League season. Unpredictably(cue the pun towards the ultimate theme of this blog, that being predictably unpredictable) has been the common denominator thus far. Who would’ve ever expected the powerhouses out east like the Philadelphia Flyers and the New York Rangers to crawl to 0-2 starts, or the supposedly goaltending rich Vancouver Canucks to struggle out of the gate. Even more astonishing is that we have seen a wide flux of scoring stars. The ageless wonder Teemu Selanne had a memorable debut along with fellow caveman Jaromir Jagr. Someone must explain to these two that we are no longer in 1995! So in this entry, I will examine some observations that I have stumbled across from this opening weekend.

Luke Schenn-NHL or AHL Calibre?

In the old NHL, where clutching and grabbing was prevalent, Luke Schenn would have been the ideal defender. However, with skating skills reminiscent of the great  Ken Daneyko, he’s always a step behind and early indications are pointing to the trade that sent James Van Riemsdyk to Toronto in exchange for Schenn was completely one sided favouring Toronto. Philadelphia’s team defence as a whole concerns me. Along with the aforementioned Schenn, Swede Nik Grossman and Brayden Coburn have struggled to adapt to the rampant pace in the early going, and from the games that I’ve witnessed, they have been the weakest unit out there generally speaking. General Manager Paul Holmgren surely will  not let this year go by the wayside and I’m sure as fellow GM’s scout their own respective teams, defenceman who are sure on foot will become available, and Holmgren will pounce quicker then Eagles fans give up on quarterbacks.

Best player on the planet? Best player in Pennsylvania?

This is an opinion I have had that begun prior to this year. Who exactly is the best player on the Pittsburgh Penguins. For years, the Canadian media has painted Sidney Crosby as this larger than life character pinning him as the next Wayne Gretzky, but in my humble opinion he’s nowhere came close to matching that, in what I believe was an unrealistic moniker to match. What Crosby is known for is his tremendous vision on the ice, which he’s lived upto, but his speed and aggressiveness has taken a quantum step back which is understandable after he has suffered through multiple blows to the head. The most complete player on the Penguins is #71 himself, Evgeni Malkin.  Malkin is the big bruising skillful stalwart that stirs the drink upfront, and it’s due to Malkin that has allowed Crosby to open space and weaker defensive assignments due to the fact that opposing coaches have matched their top defenders against Malkin.

A Young man’s league

Purely from a fan’s perspective, it is an absolute treat to see these youngens, most being teenagers making significant contributions at such an early age. Going back not so long ago to the mid to late nineties, it was an abnormality to see a nineteen year old crack a NHL lineup, let alone play in a top six role. In this current era, that has practically become common place. The confidence coaches are starting to show in the rookies/sophomores is a real telling sign that the way the game is now played has drastically changed. Over the weekend, to see such things take place like Calgary Flame rookie and former Portland Wintehawk Sven Baertschl kill penalties would’ve never happened years ago. Or, on the other side of Alberta seeing the rumbustious 2012 first overall pick Nail Yakupov get ice time in the four and four overtime was incredible to view. The saying that the coach has some major guts for employing these kind of strategical decisions can now be reversed by saying that if a coach does NOT attempt this, in many ways that could be construed as more controversial because the Monday morning quarterbacks would be all over the coach screaming why the best players weren`t given the optimal roles regardless of how old the player is. Opening weekend was a peach because like every other professional sport, the young men have taken the reigns and the vets will continually get weeded out at the hands of the faster, more mature new stars of the National Hockey League.

The Golden Road to becoming a NFL Head Coach

It’s been a while since I published a comprehensive entry. I thought tonight was just the night to get this blog back on the right foot. What I wanted to discuss tonight is the growing direct correlation between being a head coach in NCAA division 1 football ultimately leading to promotion to a National Football League coach and whether this natural progression has permanently started to exceed the notion that football people had for years, that being that the best way to become a head coach in the NFL was to serve time as a coordinator.

In America, College Football has never been bigger and according to many bloggers and experts out there, it’s popularity in the deep south has exceeded that of professional football. Why is that you ask? Is  it because of the offensive schemes that are employed compared to the everly dull schemes that professional coordinators seem to tackle opposing defences with? You watch a Saturday afternoon college game and you’ll more often than not be witness to a 45-42 score unless of course Alabama is on the tube, which in that case you’ll expect to see a 42-0 game in Bama’s favor because Alabama always possesses as close to a NFL defence as humanly possible without actually being one. Sporting fans like to see points racked up, and as I mentioned earlier when patrons consistently see close to one hundred points a game tallied up, it’ll reel  more viewers in because high scores and offensive creativity go hand in hand with higher ratings.  I raise these points to make a case for why you’re seeing more and more coaches hired on straight from the NCAA.

The NFL is ultimately a business. The objective from team owners and management aside from winning football games is to create high revenue. Over the years what team owners have begun to realize is that although winning 6-3 accomplishes a main goal, nine point games aren’t going to pack their barn. By bringing offensive minded, creative coaching staffs what has happened is that it has captivated there fan bases and sparked more attention across there market. There’s no doubt that such hirings as Rutgers Greg Schiano going to Tampa Bay prior to the 2012 season, or Marrone from Syracuse being flocked up to the city that American hockey prospect Emerson Etem once dubbed America’s most boring city, that being Buffalo and the most recent hire the Eagles made, bringing in Chip Kelly have offence written all over it. Kelly for example was the recipient of employing the most prolific offence in college ball with the Oregon Ducks. What do all of these coaches have in common? It’s sure not having a defensive wizard moniker, it’s offensive students of the game who owners have brought in to sell tickets.  Do you honestly believe the Buffalo Bills have a shot to make the playoffs under Marrone? Frankly the Jamaicans have a better shot of winning Ice hockey Olympic gold then that happening.

To you use an example of where a coach may have taken the backwards approach in the evolutionary coaching tree is close to home in our Country, Kent Austin now with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Prior to being named General Manager and Head Coach in Hamilton, Austin was the head coach at Cornell University. Potential monetary increases aside, I ‘m of the theory that this lateral move has hurt Austin’s chances of landing his coveted NFL gig. I know the audience is reading this scratching their head(I’m used to it) proclaiming that someone from the CFL JUST got hired to be  a NFL head coach in Marc Trestman. Apples and Oranges. The average fan will not know that prior to his Alouettes post, he had a multitude of experience south of the border having done some admirable with the likes of Hall of Famer Steve Young and future Hall of famer Cam Newton. Back to Austin, he doesn’t hold the same NFL cards that Trestman had which is why he would’ve been better served staying at Cornell, biting the bullet for a few more years and I’m sure at that point the NFL would of came calling.

To summarize, any young prospective coaches out there who have NFL head coaching aspirations, when debating on whether to accept a position as a NFL coordinator or a NCAA head coach, take the latter option as the long term gain will certainly be on display for the minimal term pain.
